La Palma itself is green, beautiful and relatively untouched by tourism, with its traditional Spanish culture predominant despite some 8000 German residents who have made their homes or second homes here. The lively capital is full of old Portuguese architecture, squares, bougainvillea and pigeons.

It is an Island of stark contrasts, mainly because of the great altitude of the central crater (nearly 8000 feet), but also because of the abundance of water, in contrast to the other islands. Every climatic condition is represented with its accompanying vegetation. This makes it a very interesting place to visit, particularly for walkers, who can choose between something resembling a tropical rainforest in the north, or the arid volcanic landscapes of the south, or laurel and pine forests in the centre.

The climate is described as eternal spring, with hot weather equally likely in winter as in summer, and in contrast to the Mediterranean, very rarely too hot in summer.
