Elegant house in historic Oxford - Oxford

The world famous, historic city of Oxford, is surrounded by beautiful countryside, rivers and meadows. We live in a large and elegant house at the end of a traditional Victorian terrace in South Oxford. Even though it is only a 20 minute walk to town, our house has superb views over the river and open countryside. The house is full of light.
In the entrance hall there is a Bechstein piano. There is a good sized kitchen diner with huge patio doors opening to the outside dining area and herb garden. Beneath the terrace there is a large garden.

Off the kitchen there is a utility room with a professional pizza oven. A second toilet, and domestic appliances.

As well as the kitchen diner there is a stylish dining room with a table which sits eight people. Off this room there is a study with large collection of books and a sofa bed.
The sitting room at the front is huge and light with two large sofas and open fireplace.
On the first floor there are two double bedrooms for guests' use. Both have lovely views over the countryside. The third bedroom is Peter's music studio, so not for guests use.
The main bathroom is spacious, with toilet, bath and shower (plus victorian stained glass window and view over the river)

You will see from the house that we enjoy art and design. The furniture and decor is a mixture of antiques and 1920s artefacts. This includes a large collection of vintage and antique lamps collected over the years.

The third floor is a self contained flat lived in by a couple - postgrads at the University. They are quiet and respectful and out most of the time. Even though they access the flat through the house, you will scarcely see them.

About the location

We live in central south Oxford, a quiet, traditional and friendly neighbourhood with exceptional facilities. Just a five minute stroll from our house there is a beautiful 30's well heated open air lido (open April - September) Adjoining it are tennis courts and outside table tennis, and a boating lake. If you fork left over the railway bridge you are in open countryside.

Alongside the local hotel is a pathway leading to the beautiful river Thames. In one direction you find historic Iffley village with a John Piper church, the other, Oxford City. The centre of town can also be accessed by a bus from the bottom of our road every 10 minutes. We have excellent local pubs with decent food a five minute stroll away.

On the way in to town you will pass the lovely old steamer cruise boat to Abingdon, Christchurch meadow and the cathedral. Once in town there is so much to see and do. Visit the world famous Bodleian library or see a classical concert at the Sheldonian. Great arts centres, alternative theatres, cinemas, and music venues. Colleges to explore. Marvellous museums and galleries, including the newly refurbished Ashmolean. Take a punting trips and navigate through the peaceful city backwaters. We have bikes which you are able to borrow.
Oxford City centre is small enough to explore on foot.

We have excellent transport links to London, with a 24 hours bus leaving every 15 minutes. The train takes 55 mins to Marylebone or Paddington. Heathrow buses are a 10 minute walk from the house. The bus to Heathrow takes 80 mins.

Further afield - visit the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside, including the Cotswolds, Chiltern Hills and Blenheim Palace.

If it suited, you could combine Oxford with a visit to our other home, 21/2 hours away, in the Welsh border town of Hay-on-Wye. See our other listing.
