Just a short drive along the coast from Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast, you can discover the fishing village of Burrum Heads, where the Burrum River meets the ocean. Fishermen and boats line the crystal blue water - a perfect backdrop.
Burrum Heads is a small community with a pub, bowling club, caravan parks and a small precinct with several shops, cafes and supermarket. There is a new boat ramp with pontoon next to Lions Park with its picnic facilities and public toilets.
Make your way just south of Burrum Heads where you'll find more great swimming, fishing and camping spots on the Burrum River. Explore the Wongi Waterholes - a beautiful picnic and camping spot fringed by paperbark trees, or go fishing in local favourite Lake Lenthall.
Short drive to the ferry accessing the outstanding sand island in the world. Fraser Island / Gari. The world heritage island where the rainforest grows in the sand.
The official citation pays tribute to the island's "exceptional natural beauty" and refers to "over 250km of sandy beaches with long, uninterrupted sweeps of ocean beach, with more than 40km of strikingly coloured sand cliffs, as well as spectacular dune blowouts and ocean surf beaches; tall rainforests growing on low nutrient sands; perched dune lakes including both clear "white water" lakes and dark "black water" lakes; banksia woodlands, heath, patterned swampy fens and sheltered mangrove areas in a spectacular "mosaic landscape.".
