About the location
Bibury sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It was once named `the most beautiful village in England` by artist and craftsman William Morris. Arlington Row, a row of stone-built weavers’ cottages dating back to 1380, is easily one of the most iconic Cotswolds scenes. Just beside Arlington Row, you’ll find Rack Isle: a tiny nature reserve buzzing with wildlife, particularly birds. There’s also Bibury Trout Farm, England’s oldest working trout farm at over 100 years old. Here you can spend the day fishing on the lakes, and/or buy some fresh trout to take home with you.
But Bibury is just a small slice of almost 800 square miles of glorious, protected countryside. The Cotswolds covers a huge area – almost 800 square miles – and runs through five counties (Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire). One of the delights of visiting the Cotswolds is exploring the different areas, each with its own identity, yet all with those defining Cotswolds features golden stone and rolling hills, the ‘wolds’.
In the Cotswolds you have the choice of exploring quintessentially English villages of honey-coloured stone; taking in splendid, lively market towns; visiting some of the country’s greatest palaces, castles and country houses; marvelling at the natural world in acclaimed reserves and at some of the most famous arboretums in Britain, or walking through breath-taking landscapes along historic trails - more than 3,000 miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore; ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows; 4,000 miles of historic Cotswold stone walls dividing up the landscape.
Cirencester considered the capital of Cotswolds, is 7 miles away, Burford 10 miles, Oxford, the city of dreaming spires with its stunning architecture of the university buildings- the oldest in the English-speaking world is 29 miles away, Kemble station 12 miles (London Paddington from 69 minutes)
