Gorgeous historic home set among meadows with riverbank
A peaceful rural retreat set in classic English country cottage garden, with water meadows leading down to the river.
If you're looking for somewhere to get away from it all, on your own, as a couple, or with your family, and enjoy a glorious English countryside summer escape, with private nature-rich meadows leading down to the river Waveney, then this might just be perfect for you. It's simply the most gorgeous place and we do love it here. You have the benefit of a very private space with open countryside and nature spreading out before you — yet without being totally isolated. We're in the village of Geldeston, which has two superb pubs with good menus, while you can reach the nearby town of Beccles via a lovely riverside walk. In Beccles you'll find supermarkets and everything else you need, plus rail connections to London, Cambridge and elsewhere.
The house sleeps up to six adults plus two children, across three main bedrooms and a smaller children's bedroom. Downstairs, there's a large kitchen with an Aga, four downstairs sitting rooms / reception rooms, two bathrooms (one with a jacuzzi bath) plus a downstairs WC.
If you're musically-minded, there's a full-size Roland electric piano for you to play.
Built originally as a hall house in the 16th century, our home has been extended and modernised so it's thoroughly up-to-date, comfortable and cosy. It's a "listed building", meaning that it is protected by English Heritage for its unique history, character and architectural style.
About the location
The village of Geldeston lies on the north bank of the River Waveney, and forms part of the Norfolk Broads National Park.
The Broads are Britain’s largest protected wetland area. Characterised by wildlife-rich rivers, lakes and grazing marshes, they form one of England's most beautiful areas, perhaps less known than the Lake District or the Cotswolds, for instance — but all the more delightful for that.
In the village itself you'll find two pubs: The Wherry and The Locks. Both serve good food at reasonable prices (by today's standards, at least), and The Locks in particular has a lovely riverside location where you can sit outside on long warm summer evenings.
